DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE DECIDING NOT TO VACCINATE

“I’m not going to inject my kids with all these chemicals.”

“Scare tactics are being used by pharmaceutical companies in order to get us to vaccinate our children.”

“Why should I vaccinate my kid in order to protect other kids?  They can get the vaccine if they want it.”

“My kid got the vaccine and still ended up getting the flu, vaccines obviously don’t work.”

HELLO PEOPLE – please do your research before you say ridiculous things like the above statements.  I am sick and tired hearing about cases where young children have contracted some sort of preventable disease or infection because their parents chose not to vaccinate them based on hearsay.

First of all, I’d like to start by saying that I am directing this post to those parents out there who chose not to vaccinate their kids, not based on actual evidence or scientific proof of anything, but on other people’s opionions, or something they read on the Internet and just assume it must be true.  I’m not pointing fingers at the people who have done their research, know the facts, and still choose not to vaccinate.  I might not particularly agree with them, but that is a whole other discussion.

I’d like to direct your attention to the first quote I posted: “I’m not going to inject my kids with all these chemicals”.  I have a couple of questions/comments for these people.

One – do you even know what chemicals you are avoiding?

Two – please take a look at the next thing you buy in the grocery store and let me know if you can identify everything that is included in the ingredients list.  You will be swearing off everything and not letting your kid eat anything that you didn’t grow yourself in your backyard with no pesticides or growing agents of any kind.

Three – you can find the ingredients list for the vaccines by asking your doctor what brand of vaccine they are using, and then searching for its Product Monograph from the company’s website.  In it you can find all of the information you require in order to make an informed decision about whether or not to immunize your child.

Now let’s move on to the next quote: “Scare tactics are being used by pharmaceutical companies in order to get us to vaccinate our children.”

Pharmaceutical companies are not the only ones who are suggesting that you vaccinate your child.  Doctors, Epidemiologists, Governments, etc. are the ones who are making this suggestion based on clinical data that has been compiled over many years.  There is a lot more that I would like to say on this topic but I will leave it at that for now.

“Why should I vaccinate my kid in order to protect other kids?  They can get the vaccine if they want it.”

Yes, it is true that other children’s parents may choose to vaccinate their kids, so how does your child spread the disease/virus to them?  Well, as it is plainly stated in any piece of literature on vaccines, they are not 100% effective.  Some only protect against certain strains of the virus.  Also – the efficacy rates are different from person to person.  Vaccines create a immunological response in the person, which differs from person to person.

Doctors and Clinicians also have to abide by a recommended immunization schedule.  (You can refer to the latest Canadian Immunization Guide which can be found here: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/publicat/cig-gci/index-eng.php).  Some vaccines are not given until 12 months, or 9 years in some cases.  For these preventable diseases, your kid may contract them after they could have been vaccinated, and pass them on to a child who is not yet eligible.

One more point on this, people who have been treated for certain types of cancer have to be re-vaccinated as some treatments strip them of their immunity and they become immunocompromised.  Your child may pass on the measels to one of these people which can be extremely detrimental to them.  There are other typs of syndroms or diseases that render someone immunocompromised simply by having the disease, HIV is an example.

“My kid got the vaccine and still ended up getting the flu, vaccines obviously don’t work”

As I mentioned, vaccines are not 100% effective, and some require several doses prior to being at their most effective so if your child has not received all the recommended doses, they will still be at risk to contracting the disease.

In closing, I would just like to say: PLEASE RESEARCH AS MUCH AS YOU CAN BEFORE DECIDING NOT TO VACCINATE YOUR KIDS AGAINST VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASES.  If you still decide not to vaccinate your kids, that’s up to you, but don’t believe everything you read.
